USA eliminated from 2018 World Cup by phantom goal in Costa Rica vs Panama game

The US Men's National Soccer Team won't be headed to Russia for the 2018 World Cup. In the final day of qualifiers for their group, the USMNT fell one point short, edged out by Panama and Honduras, each with 13 points, against USA with only 12 points. If Panama had failed to secure a draw, USA would have advanced on tie breakers with a goal differential of +4, versus Panama's +1.

Panama secured a draw with the assistance of a phantom goal -- where a goal was awarded, but the ball did not come close to scoring.

Russia's President, Vladimir Putin smiled when asked about the incident. "Am I sad that the USA will miss the World Cup? A tragedy, for sure," he said with a chuckle.  "Was the match fixed, maybe, but we didn't do it. Did Panama fix it? I'm not saying they did, but it isn't hard. I'm told you can buy a referee in most Central American countries for $40,000 or $50,000. A small price to pay late in a game if you need only one referee can deliver.
